Attorney Gerald Curry points after being shot in November.

Lawyering can be a dangerous job
Two years ago, a California law was enacted recognizing an ominous sign of the times: It's increasingly dangerous to be a lawyer.

Addiction takes a terrible toll,
but there is plenty of help

Today I visited a friend in the hospital. I heard he was there by way of a phone message from another friend this afternoon. The message said John is in the hospital, but he is going to be moved to a hospice facility because he is dying, and there is no hope for him. I got over there within the hour. This was the first I had heard that he was ill at all.

Future lawyers make their mark
Melissa Blake stepped to the podium in the ornate California Supreme Court chambers in Sacramento and intoned, "May it please the court." With the polish of someone twice her age and twice as experienced, Blake pleaded her case, arguing that her client's doctor violated physician-patient confidentiality by disclosing information that led to a child endangerment conviction.

Events scheduled to commemorate Brown ruling's
50th anniversary

In recognition of the 50th anniversary of the historic Brown v. Board of Education decision by the U.S. Supreme Court, the Judicial Council and the Administrative Office of the Courts will hold a symposium in Sacramento May 17. The day-long event will include several prominent speakers and who will consider Brown's legacy and examine the decision from a historical perspective.
