Gov. Davis signs bar-backed bill to crack down on UPL
A State Bar-supported bill to increase the penalty for the unauthorized practice of law (UPL) by non-lawyers was signed into law by Gov. Davis last month.

Pride in the legal profession drives the bar's new leader
When his friends and colleagues are asked to describe Santa Barbara lawyer James Herman, virtually to a person they talk about his sense of humor. And they offer a few stories as evidence: In a 5-K run at a State Bar Annual Meeting two years ago, Herman took first place in the "Women Over 50" category, in which he had mysteriously been entered.


Conference of Delegates, State Bar officially separate
It's official: The State Bar and the Conference of Delegates have separated. Both groups unanimously approved a contract agreement last month which enables them to go their separate ways while building a new, independent relationship.

Four vie for District 3 seat
For the second time in less than a year, four candidates are running to fill a vacant seat on the State Bar Board of Governors, all having taken very different paths to the election and each bringing widely divergent agendas to the race.

Six sworn in on State Bar board
Five new members of the State Bar Board of Governors were to begin three-year terms at bar's Annual Meeting in Monterey this month, joining incoming President James Herman at swearing-in ceremonies. In addition, a representative of the California Young Lawyers Association will take a seat on the board for a one-year term, and new members of the CYLA board were to take office.

As a child in South Central Los Angeles in 1965, Bernida Reagan watched Watts burn. She had National Guardsmen point rifles at her. She saw police beat up her stepbrother the day after he returned home from a second tour of duty in Vietnam. "I witnessed a lot of injustice and racism growing up," Reagan said recently.
