Sloan’s lawyer civility promotion wins go-ahead
The State Bar Board of Governors has given the go-ahead to a pet project of
President-elect Sheldon Sloan — a plan to promote civility within the
legal world.

On a unanimous vote at its August meeting, the board approved a $30,000 allocation
for creation and operation of an Attorney Civility Task Force that will study
and recommend models, including one already in operation in Santa Clara County,
aimed at improving civility among attorneys. Sloan said the task force will
report to the Member Oversight Committee, which, starting in October, will
be chaired by Marguerite Downing, a Los Angeles County public defender.
An important component of the civility program, Sloan said, will be to get
lawyers to voluntarily sign a pledge of professionalism. To that end, he wants
to coordinate with other efforts by the bar to promote attorney pledges to
commit to pro bono and to create more diversity in law schools and the workplace.
