$394 million ‘justice gap’ plagues legal services
The gap between the resources needed to meet the legal needs of California’s low-income population and the resources that actually are available is so huge that it would take an infusion of nearly $400 million to close it, according to a just-released report by the California Commission on Access to Justice.

Feedback sought for draft lawyer civility standards
The Attorney Civility Task Force is seeking feedback from California lawyers on the initial draft of voluntary standards of civility and professionalism. Although some bar associations have adopted guidelines or standards for their members, California lacks a single set of civility standards for use statewide.

Most lawyers pay their bar dues on time
Nearly 88 percent of California’s attorneys paid their 2007 membership dues by the statutory deadline of Feb. 1, a marked increase from the 73 percent who paid by the statutory deadline last year, according to preliminary figures from the bar’s billing department.

Franchise law is bar’s newest legal specialty
For the first time in 12 years, the State Bar has added to its list of bar-certified legal specialties, this time in Franchise and Distribution Law. The inaugural Franchise and Distribution Law exam, which marks the first step toward achieving certification, will be given Aug. 12.
