Retired appellate Justice Elwood Lui has wrapped up his work as special master appointed by the Supreme Court to oversee a special assessment levied in 1998 to fund the State Bar's discipline system.

Elwood LuiLui told the court his services were no longer needed and advised it that the majority of funds collected in the discipline fund have been disbursed or have been designated for appropriate use in the discipline system.

The court ordered that any remaining funds from the assessment be held in a separate account and that their use be determined by the bar's executive team and authorized by the executive director.

Lui was appointed in December 1998 to oversee the assessment ordered by the Supreme Court in the wake of former Gov. Pete Wilson's veto of the State Bar fee bill in 1997. As a result of the veto, hundreds of bar employees were laid off and the discipline system virtually shut down. The assessment was to keep the discipline operation going.
