The Supreme Court authorized payment of $68,331.25 to retired Justice Elwood Lui for his services over the first three months of 2000 as special master overseeing an assessment to support the State Bar’s discipline operation.

At the bar’s request, the court also asked Lui to continue to provide assistance through June 30. Appointed in 1998, Lui has been supervising the collection and disbursement of a special fee ordered by the Supreme Court to resuscitate the bar’s lawyer discipline unit following the 1997 veto of the bar’s fee bill.

Following submission of Lui’s final report in April, the court ordered that the balance of monies in the special fund be transferred to the bar, kept in a segregated fund, and used for purposes relating to support of the discipline system and the enhancement of bar technology.

As of March 23, $4.7 million remained in the fund, of which $3.7 million was unappropriated.
