449 attorneys pass exam to be certified as specialists

Four hundred forty-nine attorneys passed the State Bar exam to be certified as legal specialists, the bar announced. The overall pass rate was 66 percent.

Approximately 3,000 attorneys are certified by the bar in the only program of its kind in the nation.

The certification program is designed to help consumers find attorneys who have demonstrated ability and experience in specialized fields of law.

Attorneys can be certified in eight areas of law: appellate; criminal; estate planning, trust and probate; family; immigration and nationality; personal and small business bankruptcy; taxation; and workers' compensation.

Qualifications

To qualify as a certified specialist, an attorney must be an active member of the bar, have substantial experience in the field, pass a written exam, complete approved legal education programs and be evaluated by judges and other attorneys.

The next written exam will be held in the summer of 1997.

Information about certification is available from the Office of Certification, 100 Van Ness Ave., 28th Floor, San Francisco 94102-5238; 415/241-2100.
