Two attorneys honored for tax law work

Two California attorneys were honored last month for their contributions to tax law.

Eugene Silverman, who died in the recent TWA flight 800 plane crash, received the 1996 V. Judson Klein Award, and Hart H. Speigel was given the Joanne M. Garvey award for lifetime achievement. Both honors are presented by the State Bar's Taxation Section.

Speigel, 78, was honored for his outstanding contribution to the field of tax law for nearly 50 years. He is a partner at Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison in San Francisco.

The Garvey award was created in honor of the founder of the Taxation Section.

Silverman, a partner in the Westwood firm of De Castro, West & Chodrow, was 54. The Judson Klein award is presented annually to a California attorney who possesses a "keen and imaginative intellect, a true passion for the law and great personal integrity."
