Burton carries bill to keep bar fees at $458

Sen. John Burton (D-San Francisco) introduced the State Bar's fee bill, seeking authorization of $458 in annual dues for 1998 and 1999.

The dues level would continue the $20 reduction which went into effect this year. The reduction was approved by the Board of Governors as a result of belt-tightening at the bar during the last two years.

Prior to the $20 reduction to $458 for 1997, State Bar dues for most active attorneys had been $478 per year since 1990.

Newly admitted lawyers pay $359, and attorneys in practice between two and three years pay $390.

SB 1145, introduced Feb. 28, would authorize dues for 1998 and 1999. First stop is the Senate Judiciary Committee; a hearing has not yet been scheduled.
