[1997 ELECTION] Presidential candidates to engage in Q&A forum

For the first time, members of the State Bar Board of Governors will question three candidates for the bar presidency at a Q&A session the day before the election.

The questioning will take place July 25 at the bar offices in Los Angeles, 1149 South Hill St. The voting for president will be held the following day.

Under the traditional format, each candidate delivers a "campaign" speech, outlining a platform and offering reasons he or she should head the 155,000-member State Bar.

That will still happen on Saturday morning, but now each also will be subjected to questions from colleagues on Friday afternoon. Both sessions will be open to the public.

The Q&A forum was recommended by board member Malissa McKeith, who lamented that in years past board members never had the opportunity to ask candidates the same questions simultaneously.

The three candidates this year, each a third-year member of the board, are Marc Adelman, Peter Kaye and Pauline Weaver.

In addition to the presidential election, the board also will hold its regular committee meetings on Friday, July 25, and full board meeting July 26 immediately following the vote.
