A Shasta County attorney who resigned from the State Bar a year ago with discipline charges pending has been sentenced to six years in state prison.
JESSE DEAN CANNAN [#26465], 67, of Cottonwood was charged in superior court with embezzlement, theft, commercial burglary and unauthorized practice of law. He will be eligible for parole in three years.
Judge James Ruggiero noted that while Cannan held a trusted position, he embezzled money, spent time in prison, was released and reassumed his practice, then ended his career doing the same thing all over again. The judge ordered Cannan to pay full restitution to the victims.
Court documents show that Cannan took a $131,175 settlement for himself which had been turned down by his client. He also misappropriated $25,000 from another client.
