Insurance committee seeks coverage alternatives

Faced with increased premiums for individual lawyers enrolled in the bar-approved health insurance plan, the State Bar’s Committee on Group Insurance Programs is seeking alternatives to provide health coverage at reasonable rates for solo practitioners.

Because of potential premium rate increases of approximately 60-70 percent, the health plan administrators transferred enrollees to larger individual Blue Cross plans.

The bar’s insurance committee determined that continuing a separate plan for State Bar members would have likely resulted in continued premium increases and benefit reductions. The transfer, which involves filling out additional forms by members of the bar’s health insurance plan, will not affect eligibility for coverage.
