Pay your fees, avoid suspension

Attorneys who fail to pay the 1998 and/or 1999 mandatory membership fees, penalties or costs face suspension by the California Supreme Court.

On Aug. 23, the State Bar will file with the court a list of delinquent attorneys. The court is expected to order the suspension of those on the list beginning Sept. 27.

Those on the list who wish to avoid suspension must pay their fees, late penalties and/or costs (in "certified funds") by Sept. 24. Payments will be accepted by either the San Francisco or Los Angeles offices.

In 1997, 858 attorneys were suspended for failure to pay fees. Such a suspension is placed permanently in State Bar public records.

Attorneys with questions about their fees may write to Membership Services Operations, State Bar of California, 180 Howard St., San Francisco CA 94105-1639, or call 415/538-2360.
