Two southern California attorneys active in Volunteers in Parole (VIP)
Inc. received the annual California Youth Authority Award for Mentoring Youth. VIP
matches attorneys who serve as mentors to parolees from the CYA and the California
Department of Corrections. The program enjoys a high rate of success; more than 75 percent
of parolees mentored by attorneys complete parole.
San Diego attorney Alex Landon was honored for more than 20 years of mentoring
parolees. In 1995, Landon almost single-handedly initiated the VIP program in San Diego.
He serves on the board of directors and develops support for mentoring activities in the
legal community.
The second award recipient, Anne Ryder, is a public defender for the Harbor Justice
Center in Orange County and has volunteered countless hours mentoring parolees since 1992.
She currently works with seven matches, recruits other lawyers as volunteer mentors and is
vice chair of the VIP board. |
