Events scheduled to commemorate Brown ruling's 50th anniversary
In recognition of the 50th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education,
the Judicial Council and the Administrative Office of the Courts plan several
events. On April 27, a panel discussion will be broadcast via satellite to all
California courts at 9 a.m. and repeated at 3 p.m. A day earlier, an interactive
gallery-quality exhibit, "The Long Walk to Freedom," opens at the State Building
in San Francisco and continues through May 17. The exhibit highlights the contributions
of 28 American civil rights activists, many from California.
On May 17, the Judicial Council's task force on Brown will sponsor an
all-day symposium in Sacramento. The event will include several prominent speakers
who will address Brown's legacy.
In addition, the anniversary of Brown v. Board is the focus of Law Day
(May 1) this year. Materials are available through the ABA at www.abanet.org/publiced/lawday.
The State Bar of California is sending an educational brochure for middle school
students around the state.
