State Bar endorses disability insurance plan

Although many attorneys may consider their home, car or personal belongings their most important asset, it is likely that continued good health and the ability to earn a living should be higher on the list. The odds of being permanently disabled for 90 days or longer before age 65 are one in three, and according to the Society of Actuaries Report, the average disability lasts about five years.

The State Bar Endorsed Disability Insurance Plan, in place for more than 50 years, is designed to protect against this risk as well as provide peace of mind and security.

The plan, underwritten by Union Central Life Insurance Co., allows bar members to receive as much as $10,000 in monthly benefits when disabled and offers a choice of waiting periods ranging from 90 to 365 days. Benefits can be paid for as long as “to age 65” if a disability lingers for a long period of time.

The State Bar also has negotiated a 15 percent premium discount for qualifying members.
