Elder abuse expert wins national service award
The legal research expert for the State Bar’s extensive public education
program has been cited nationally for her volunteer service to prevent elder
abuse.
Helen Karr of Pacifica, who has assisted the bar for the past three years
in producing its three major public education guides, received the 2005 Spirit
of Service award in Washington, D.C., last month from the Corporation for National
and Community Service. Karr was recognized for her accomplishments as an RSVP
(Retirement Supplemental Voluntary Program) volunteer with the Seniors Against
Investment Fraud program in San Mateo County.
“Helen Karr has gone above and beyond the call to serve her community
and nation,” said corporation head David Eisner. The corporation is the
federal agency that administers the RSVP program.
The Spirit of Service Awards pay tribute to the most outstanding participants
in each of the corporation’s national service programs — Senior
Corps, AmeriCorps and Learn and Serve America, Eisner noted. “Not only
does Helen give her own time and talents,” he said, “but she inspires
others in the community to volunteer and give of themselves.”
