Former jurist Elwood Lui receives Witkin Medal

Justice Elwood Lui, partner-in-charge of the San Francisco office of Jones
Day and a former municipal, superior and appellate court judge, received the
State Bar’s Bernard Witkin Medal last month for his significant contributions
to the quality of justice and legal scholarship. The medal, established in
1993, recognizes “those legal giants who have altered the landscape of
California jurisprudence.”
Lui, 65, has had a distinguished career and a long commitment to public service.
He teaches law and is a renowned authority on financial and business matters.
He began his career as a deputy attorney general in the Antitrust Division
of the state Department of Justice before going into private practice, and
in 1975 was appointed to the Municipal Court. He was later elevated to the
Los Angeles Superior Court and was appointed associate justice to the California
Court of Appeal in 1981. He also served for a year as associate justice, pro
tem, to the California Supreme Court.
He is the lawyer representative for the Central District to the Ninth Circuit,
and has served as president of the California Judges Association and the California
Supreme Court Historical Society.
