No shortage of advice on same sex marriage case
The California Supreme Court is not lacking for advice as it considers the issue of gay marriage. Forty-five amicus briefs were filed in response to the challenge by gay couples and the City and County of San Francisco to the state prohibition on same-sex marriages, arguing everything from the necessity to take into account a transformed culture to California’s role as a bellwether state to the absence of standing by San Francisco to file suit at all.

The State Bar launched a new members-only Web site last month, CalBar Connect, for attorneys to link to affinity partners who are offering value-added products to California lawyers.

Board tightens disciplinary resignation rules
Lawyers who face serious disciplinary charges will no longer be able to resign at the last minute in order to avoid disbarment. The State Bar Board of Governors tightened its disciplinary rules last month after the Supreme Court expressed concern about the number of lawyers who appear to be gaming the system by going through an investigation of charges against them, a trial and a disbarment recommendation, but then resigning shortly before the hammer falls.
