In order to make pro bono service more attractive and financially feasible for retired lawyers, the bar has arranged the following benefits to membership in the Emeritus Attorney program:

To qualify for enrollment in the Emeritus Attorney program, attorneys or judges must be in good standing with the bar and have practiced law for at least 10 years, with three of the last eight years in California.

They must provide their pro bono services through an approved program and they may not otherwise practice law outside the program.
