Supreme Court decided crucial issues
For better or worse, America relies on the Supreme Court
to be the ultimate arbiter of constitutional law and therefore to resolve some
of society's most difficult and divisive issues. None of the 81 cases decided
by the Supreme Court in its October 2001 Term was as important or as controversial

Client Security Fund comes to the rescue when 'bad apples' steal from clients
Johnny Saldivia didn't want a divorce lawyer in the first place. But when his estranged wife hired one some five years ago, he went straight to the Yellow Pages and found his own, reluctantly running up $3,535 in credit card debt to pay the fees. What he got, he says, was an attorney who didn't return calls, who failed to notify him about a canceled court hearing, who never paid him back in spite of a fee arbitration award and who eventually filed for bankruptcy.
Five win election to bar board
Five lawyers won election to the State Bar Board of Governors last month, three of them annointed as "outsiders" by a board gadfly who campaigned actively for what he called "fresh faces of reform."
State Bar celebrates its 75th anniversary
The State Bar of California turned 75 on July 29. As part of its birthday celebration, California Bar Journal will publish a special 32-page commemorative insert in its October 2002 issue.
Special election set for District 3 seat on State Bar board
Aug. 23 is the last day for candidates for the open District 3 seat on the State Bar Board of Governors to file a nominating petition.
The board set a special election to replace Marie Weiner, who recently joined the San Mateo County Superior Court. District 3 includes Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties.
