State Bar appeals to attorneys to take
on indigent defendants in capital cases
By Kathleen O. Beitiks Staff Writer

A critical shortage of qualified counsel to represent indigent defendants in capital appeals has led the State Bar to put out a call for attorneys to take on the Supreme Court cases. According to bar officials, the number of qualified, private counsel available for appointments has not kept pace with the number of capital judgments.

"This shortfall in appointed counsel has resulted in a steadily growing number of persons without counsel who have been convicted of capital offenses and have direct appeals pending before theMORE California Supreme Court," said Tom Stolpman, president of the State Bar.
