Layoff notices handed to 500 employees; discipline system stops taking new complaints by NANCY McCARTHY As nearly 500 State Bar employees received layoff notices late last month, the discipline unit stopped taking any new complaints from consumers and other departments planned for near or total shutdown. If the legislature does not enact urgency legislation to authorize the bar to collect dues from its members, nearly 470 employees will lose their jobs June 26 and the remainder will become unemployed July 10. Foundation reaches out to individuals

BEITIKS Guided by the words of philosopher Thomas Aquinas, leaders of the Foundation of the State Bar of California, when it was established in 1990, decided to let the organization's good work speak for itself. But eight years later, especially in the midst of the State Bar's current financial turmoil and uncertainty, foundation leaders have come to the realization that a little horn-tooting is not such a bad idea.
