Law schools see surge in applications
Finding a job these days can be tough. With record numbers of people now deciding to pursue a law degree, just getting admitted to many law schools has become increasingly difficult as well.

Davis appoints two to bar board
Gov. Gray Davis appointed Dr. Thomas Haider and Melvin D. Lee to the State Bar Board of Governors last month, giving the board its full complement of 23 members for the first time since 1997.

Bar honors pro bono attorneys
A Glendale legal team helped finalize the adoptions of dozens of foster children without charge. San Diego attorneys spent more than 3,500 pro bono hours representing a severely disabled boy in litigation against a school district. And thanks to a Berkeley attorney, an abused wheelchair-bound senior citizen no longer faces eviction from her home.

Attorneys cautioned on Sarbanes-Oxley disclosure
In implementing the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, the Securities and Exchange Commission recently approved a rule permitting attorneys practicing before the SEC to disclose certain confidential information to the SEC without their client's consent.

Davis signs fee bill; most will pay $390
Gov. Gray Davis signed the State Bar's fee bill last month, leaving dues for California attorneys flat for the fifth consecutive year. Most active lawyers will pay $390 next year and inactive lawyers will pay $50.
