goes after phony lawyers
Scattered throughout four floors of the State Bar’s Los Angeles building
are 900 boxes of legal files and various computers seized from the offices
of lawyers who died, abandoned their practices or so seriously breached their
duties that the bar asked superior courts to assume jurisdiction.

Indika Wijesekera was recovering from drug addiction and living in a Salvation
Army facility in Orange County last year when he went to a “Day of Self-Esteem” event,
sponsored by a local nonprofit, in hopes of getting some job training, contacts
with potential employers — and a new look.
Bar
benefits attract interest
Although most California lawyers are not aware of State Bar-sponsored insurance
and corporate discount programs, a substantial number say they would be interested
in offerings such as discounts on travel, car rentals and computer and other
electronic purchases.
Older, whiter bar, working a little less
Although the demographic makeup of the State Bar continues to diversify, its membership is both whiter and older than it was just five years ago, according to a survey conducted in December and January.
Guilford nominated for federal judgeship
Former State Bar President Andrew J. Guilford was nominated last month for a federal judgeship on the Central District bench in Los Angeles.
Van
de Kamp heads panel to study state’s criminal justice system
Former State Bar President John Van de Kamp will chair the California Commission
on the Fair Administration of Justice, a nonpartisan panel studying how to
improve the state’s criminal justice system.
Fund
created to honor bar foundation leader
A memorial fund honoring the first executive director of the Foundation of
the State Bar has been established to accept contributions that will support
one of the foundation’s educational programs.
