Role of governor's office and creation of dual panel for appellate appointments consumes July meeting

[Malissa McKeith] More than a year after it established a committee to review the way the state's judges are selected, the State Bar Board of Governors gave its approval to all but eight of the group's 32 recommendations. Because board members could not agree on the recommended role of a governor's representative in observing meetings of the Judicial Nominees Evaluation Commission (JNE), further discussion of other disputed recommendations was bogged down and postponed until the Annual Meeting in San Diego next month.

The advisory committee recommended that the governor's appointments secretary be permitted to observe JNE meetings, a proposal which did not sit well with some board members.

Also pulled for further discussion was a recommendation that the board of governors replace its closed, private nomination of JNE commissioners with a written application procedure open to all interested persons.
