Specialty bar associations have been challenged by the State Bar Board of Governors to approve a resolution of commitment to the children of California by offering pro bono legal services to those in need.

Several bar groups, including the San Diego County Bar Association, Los Angeles County Bar Association, Bar Association of San Francisco, Consumer Attorneys of California, Monterey Women Lawyers, San Bernardino County Bar Association and the San Francisco La Raza Lawyers Association, have approved the resolution, which urges all their members, the state’s law firms and law schools to support pro bono representation of children at risk in the state.

Other groups endorsing the resolution were: Alameda County Bar Association, Public Law Center, San Diego Volunteer Lawyers Program, Women Lawyers of Sacramento, Lawyers Club of San Diego, Charles Houston Bar Association, Foothills Bar Association of San Diego and Queens Bench of San Francisco.

State Bar President Marc Adelman noted that of the 9.3 million children in California, 2.3 million live in poverty and many are in dire need of legal counsel from the state’s attorneys.
